A&E waiting times are now the worst since records began
Accident & Emergency waiting times are now the worst since records began, official figures show. Labour said the statistics show the NHS is heading for a winter of “abject misery”. But the Conservatives said the situation underlined the risks of putting Jeremy Corbyn in charge – warning the health service could be crippled by Labour’s plans for a four-day week. One in six patients waited longer than four hours in A&E; in England during October – the worst-ever performance since a target was introduced in 2004. Just 83.6 per cent of such patients were treated or admitted in four hours, according to the figures from NHS England. The health service has also missed a raft of other targets, including how long people wait to start planned treatment and waits for cancer care. Percentage of A&E; admittances treated or admitted within 4 hours Nuffield Trust chief economist, Professor John Appleby, said: “These figures show the next government will immediately be faced with one of the bleakest winters in the NHS’s history.” The think tank said 100,000 people could end up stuck on trolleys waiting for hospital beds. The Royal College of Nursing said the figures were particularly worrying, because there have yet to be any serious flu outbreaks, or particularly cold weather. A&E; doctors said they were “stretched beyond their limits”. Dr Katherine Henderson, President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, said the figures “should be a source of shame for politicians of all stripes.” Experts said shortages of doctors, nurses and beds meant the NHS was struggling to keep with rising demand from an ageing population. And they warned that a pension crisis, which means rising numbers of senior doctors are cutting their hours, is exacerbating the situation. The data shows 4.42 million patients on the waiting list for planned surgery, of whom 84.8 per cent waited less than 18 weeks – well below the 92 per cent target, last hit in 2016. Jonathan Ashworth, shadow Health Secretary, said: “The Conservatives have ushered in the worst NHS crisis on record. “Under Boris Johnson the NHS is in crisis and we’re heading for a winter of abject misery for patients.” He accused the Tories of cutting more than 15,000 hospital beds in the last decade. But Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “These figures show just how important it is that we stop Jeremy Corbyn. We are giving the biggest cash boost ever to our NHS, but Corbyn’s chaotic policies will put that at risk. “With rising demand, and with dedicated staff already working exceptionally hard, the last thing our NHS can afford is Labour’s plans for a four-day week and uncontrolled and unlimited immigration, which would cripple our health service – leaving it understaffed and underfunded.” Luciana Berger, Liberal Democrat health spokesman said: “This is a damning indictment of the Conservatives’ dismal record on the NHS. It is shameful that patients are being abandoned for hours in A&E; or waiting for months in pain for routine operations. “The Tories’ extreme Brexit would make a dire situation worse, by driving away the EU nurses we desperately need.” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said “huge demand” was to blame. He said only the Tories could be trusted to have a “strong, dynamic economy” to ensure the rises in the NHS budget being planned could be made. “I’m afraid when I look at the rival proposals and the economic disaster that Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party would cause, that will make it impossible for us in the long term to fund the NHS,” he said. Labour accused the Tories of being “staggeringly out of touch” after Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the NHS was in many ways performing better than ever. Mr Hancock pointed to the rising number of patients requiring treatment and said the number of operations done had actually risen by 7 per cent over the last 12 months. “In many ways, the NHS is performing better than it ever has. The challenge is that demand is increasing as well,” he told BBC Radio 4’s The World At One programme. “The performance of the system is incredible. The people who are working in the NHS are doing a remarkable job. “We are putting record amounts of funding in over the next four years. We have got record numbers of doctors and nurses, with more to come.” Mr Ashworth said: “This is staggeringly out of touch. “Matt Hancock is clueless about the levels of pain and misery he and his Tory cuts have caused patients. “He insists ‘in many ways the NHS is performing better than it ever has’ on the day it’s confirmed the NHS A&E; performance is the worst ever. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said it was “disgraceful” the four-hour A&E; target was not being met.
